After a successful military career, Mohammed transitioned into the private sector, becoming the managing director of Atoto Press Limited. However, his dedication to public service called him back, and in 1998, he assumed the role of national security adviser (NSA) to Abdulsalami Abubakar. With the dawn of the fourth republic, Mohammed was appointed chief of staff to Obasanjo, a role he continued under President Umaru Yar'Adua. His tenure as chief of staff was marked by his unwavering commitment to the nation's interests.
The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) has expressed profound grief over the loss of General Mohammed, describing it as a monumental loss to the emirate and the nation as a whole. In their condolence statement, the IEDPU highlighted Mohammed's pioneering roles, noting his historic achievements as the first Ilorin son to serve as a state governor and the first to attain the rank of a two-star general in the Nigerian armed forces.
