It's a common sight to see travellers attaching an 'identification marker' to their suitcase before heading off on holiday. This not only helps them quickly identify their luggage on the carousel upon arrival but also ensures they don't mistakenly pick up someone else's bag.
However, a travel channel on TikTok has sounded the alarm about this popular airport tactic, suggesting it might do more harm than good. In a video, they cautioned: "Attention travellers! Tying ribbons to your suitcase might seem like a cute way to personalize your luggage, but it could lead to some major problems.
"A baggage handler has revealed that those colourful ribbons could easily get caught in airport machinery, potentially causing delays and even risking damage or loss of your precious bags!"
Instead, luggage brand Eminent recommends using vibrant stickers or a protective cover to achieve the same effect.
Their advice was clear: "Selecting the right luggage tags and accessories can make your suitcase stand out while adding a touch of personality and practicality.
"When choosing luggage tags, opt for bold colours or eye-catching designs that are easy to spot on a busy carousel.
"Bright hues, patterns, or fun shapes, such as animals or travel-themed designs, can make your luggage instantly recognisable."
When it comes to picking luggage tags, durability should be your top priority. It’s recommended to opt for tags crafted from robust materials such as leather, silicone, or reinforced plastic that can endure the rigours of travel.
It's also important to make sure the attachment method, whether it’s a strap or clasp, is reliable and will stay in place securely. Some tags even include locking features for an extra layer of protection.
In sharing their own savvy travel tips, a Reddit user revealed: "Red duct tape crudely wrapped around the suitcase handle won't come off."
They added: "It's ugly, easy to see and the texture is an unmistakeable reminder to others who may grab it. Got that tip from a now retired United captain."
Another traveller chimed in with their strategy: "My dad draws red paint marker squares on every side. Travels all the time."
A different user disclosed their unique method: "I use duct tape with penguins on it, in all of my travels I've never seen anyone else use it."
Yet another individual recounted an amusing incident regarding their distinctive bag: "One of my pieces of luggage is bright pink with black polka-dots and a huge Hello Kitty face on it."
"It was left behind by the airline on my last trip (long story), and I was given a lost luggage form that was already filled out. My luggage was described as pink with no distinguishing features.."
Wrapping up the anecdote, they concluded with relief: "It arrived safely at my hotel the next morning, thankfully. We do use this tip though. All of our luggage is very distinguishable with interesting luggage tags, stickers, etc. It was just very funny to me that my most unique piece was described as 'pink'."
